History of the W188

The W188 190 SL debuted at the 1954 New York Auto Show as Mercedes-Benz's answer to affordable sports car enthusiasts.

Development began in the early 1950s to create a more accessible alternative to the expensive 300 SL Gullwing. The engineering team prioritized reliability and ease of maintenance while retaining Mercedes' hallmark quality and driving dynamics.

The removable hardtop became a signature feature, allowing owners to customize their driving experience for different seasons and occasions. Production ramped up quickly, with the 190 SL becoming one of Mercedes' best-selling sports cars of its generation.

Production ended in 1963 after nearly 26,000 units were built worldwide. The 190 SL's successor, the 230 SL, inherited its philosophy but introduced a new pagoda-style roof design and different engine architecture.
